Joe & Sari

Some love stories are years in the making. Ours had been, too. This is the story of a trip to Mexico City: we landed the night before, and on Valentine's Day the dinner proposal Sari already knew was coming was upstaged, in the best way, by the day's only surprise, a castle.
Joe and Sari had talked about marriage for a long time, and when they flew to Mexico City for Valentine's Day, Sari knew exactly where the trip was headed: a proposal, at dinner, on February 14. That was always the plan, and she knew it all along. What she did not know was that a castle would get there first.
They landed in Mexico City the night before and went straight out for tacos with Eloy and Ibet, just the four of them around a small table. Nobody was in a hurry that night. The dinner proposal Sari was expecting was still a day ahead of them.
Joe, as it happens, had a plan. A very good one. He had arranged it all ahead of time with a beautiful restaurant in Mexico City, where on the night of February 14, over dinner, he would ask her to marry him. It was polished, it was romantic, and Sari knew all about it: the nice dinner proposal was the moment she had been expecting from the start. Their dear friends Eloy and Ibet Chio, traveling with them, were in on the plan too. The only thing nobody had planned was what happened first, that afternoon at the castle.
The next day, February 14, they went out exploring, and that afternoon they went sightseeing in the Bosque de Chapultepec. Joe's heart was set on one place: el Castillo de Chapultepec, the castle on the hill. But the day had run long, the castle would close soon, and Joe found himself hurrying everyone along the path. Sari could not understand it. She wanted to slow down, to take pictures, to take it all in. Joe, with a ring in his pocket and a castle slipping away from him, would not be slowed. Eloy and Ibet understood perfectly.
On the castle terrace, with Mexico City spread out below them, Ibet gently drew Sari's attention away. And in that small, perfect opening, Joe stepped up behind the love of his life, went down on one knee, and asked the question they had both been traveling toward for years.
She said yes.
What the photos cannot quite show: the strangers around them erupted. The crowd on that terrace cheered for two people they had never met, in a castle neither of them would ever forget, on Valentine's Day.

Still on one knee, he looked up at her. She bent down, cradled his face, and kissed him. Then they were both on their feet, laughing, holding on.
And then, that night, they did the plan anyway. February 14, the same night as the castle afternoon, Joe and Sari kept their reservation, and the restaurant carried out everything Joe had arranged: the staff gathering around the table, a bouquet of red roses for Sari, and a dessert bearing a small card with the question, in Spanish:
¿Quieres casarte conmigo?
Now, full disclosure, because credit is due: none of this was a surprise to Sari. She had known Joe was going to propose at dinner all along. It was always the plan, a nice dinner proposal, and by the time dessert arrived she was already engaged. And yet, look at her in these photos and in the highlights: the tears, the wide eyes, the hand to her face, as if she had no idea what was coming. That is an amazing actress at work. Best performance of the night, and it was not even close. She played the dinner proposal she had been expecting for exactly what Joe had dreamed it would be, and she gave him, and everyone watching, the whole beautiful moment anyway.
So Joe carried out the proposal he had rehearsed, seated across from her, roses on the table, the staff standing by, and Sari met him every bit of the way. There was a kiss, applause, a ring moment with their hands joined across the table, and champagne raised in interlocked arms. Eloy and Ibet, who had known the plan all along, finally got to just celebrate.
The castle was the surprise. Dinner was the plan, beautifully played. She said a real, surprised yes on the terrace, and then, knowing full well it was coming, a joyful yes at the table too.
The engagement was one day. The marriage is everything after: family vacations in Dallas, with the whole crew at Medieval Times and the two of them holding hands at Meow Wolf, the ring right there in frame. Boba runs in McAllen with Belinda, Elijah, and Autumn. Concert nights. Quiet evenings at the park, looking at the same view. That is the life the wedding is being built on, and it is already well underway.

February 14, 2026, Castillo de Chapultepec. The surprise that beat the plan.
That same night, just as planned: roses, a dessert with a question on it, and an award-worthy performance from Sari, who knew it was coming all along.

It started the night before with tacos when we arrived, just the four of us, with a dinner proposal ahead that Sari already knew was coming. The next day, February 14, the castle surprised her first, on a terrace above the city. Here is how it unfolded, in order.
The castle was the surprise, but it did not cancel the plan. Sari had known about the dinner proposal all along, and that night we kept our reservation anyway, over roses and a dessert that asked the question in Spanish, with Sari giving the performance of the night.
Concerts, family vacations, boba runs, and quiet nights close to home. This is the everyday the wedding is being built on.
